These regions revealed that Pandora contained far more diverse ecosystems and societies than previously shown.

Film Overview

Avatar Fire And Ash movie poster

Avatar: Fire And Ash took place shortly after the events of The Way Of Water. The Sully family remained connected to the Metkayina while the RDA continued expanding its colonization effort across Pandora. Human forces established additional bases and pushed into regions previously untouched by industrial activity. These operations threatened multiple Na'vi clans and destabilized ecosystems beyond the forests and oceans introduced in earlier films.

The film introduced volcanic environments and ash-covered territories inhabited by new Na'vi clans adapted to extreme conditions. These groups developed different survival strategies, hunting methods, and social traditions shaped by harsh terrain and limited resources. Their beliefs about Eywa and their attitudes toward outsiders varied significantly, creating both alliances and conflicts. These differences highlighted the diversity of Na'vi civilization and reinforced that Pandora supported many distinct cultures.

Plot Summary

The story took place shortly after the events of Avatar: The Way Of Water. While living with the Metkayina, Jake Sully and his family mourned the death of Neteyam. Neytiri's grief developed into deep hatred toward humans. When a convoy of human merchant vessels arrived near Metkayina territory, Jake decided Spider should return to the human scientist camp for safety. The Sully family accompanied him on the journey.

The convoy was ambushed by the Mangkwan, a volcano-dwelling Na'vi clan that rejected Eywa and followed a more aggressive ideology. Led by their matriarch Varang, the Mangkwan attacked the ships, set them on fire, and looted supplies. During the chaos, the Sully family became separated. Colonel Miles Quaritch and Sergeant Lyle Wainfleet encountered Jake, and the two sides reluctantly cooperated to locate Spider. When Spider's oxygen mask failed, he collapsed from asphyxiation. Kiri used Pandoran mycelial organisms to stabilize him, which caused Spider to develop the ability to breathe Pandora's atmosphere.

The Mangkwan later captured the Sully children along with Jake and Quaritch. While imprisoned, Quaritch taught Varang how to use human firearms. Kiri controlled nearby plant life to kill their guards, allowing the group to escape. Afterward, Norm Spellman and Max Patel examined Spider and discovered an organism growing inside his body that allowed him to breathe Pandora's air. Spider also developed a neural queue, enabling him to bond with Pandoran wildlife. Kiri later learned she had been sired by Eywa, although she remained unable to fully connect with her.

Quaritch returned to the Mangkwan village and supplied them with firearms and flamethrowers. He convinced Varang to form an alliance with the RDA and began a romantic relationship with her. Meanwhile, Kiri helped Spider explore his new abilities, and the two grew closer. Quaritch later captured Spider after separating him from Kiri, using him to lure Jake into surrender.

Quaritch and the Mangkwan attacked the Metkayina village, demanding Jake. Jake surrendered to prevent large-scale fighting, and both he and Spider were taken to Bridgehead City, where the Mangkwan had relocated. While Jake was held prisoner, Lo'ak searched for Payakan but was attacked by marine predators before being rescued by tulkun. The tulkun gathered for their annual congregation, attracting human hunters seeking valuable resources. Biologist Ian Garvin objected to the hunt, but the RDA continued preparations.

Spider underwent testing by RDA scientists while Jake was scheduled for execution. Neytiri infiltrated the base, and Ian Garvin stole a bulldozer to help free Jake. Spider escaped the laboratories and protected Jake and Neytiri by acting as a human shield, knowing the RDA could not risk killing him. After escaping, Jake argued that Spider represented a threat to Pandora, but he ultimately chose not to kill him. Neytiri finally accepted Spider as part of the family.

Jake warned the tulkun of an incoming massacre, but their council refused to abandon their pacifist traditions. Lo'ak returned with Payakan and Tan'ok, the scarred survivor of a human attack, convincing the elders to reconsider. Jake bonded once again with the Toruk and rallied Na'vi clans to prepare for battle. When the RDA fleet arrived to hunt the tulkun, the Na'vi and tulkun launched an ambush.

Quaritch and the Mangkwan joined the battle, causing heavy casualties. Ronal was mortally wounded and died during childbirth, and Neytiri took the newborn child, Pril, before being captured. Kiri finally connected with Eywa and asked for help, triggering a massive wildlife attack on RDA forces. Jake used Toruk to destroy the RDA flagship in a magnetic flux, killing General Ardmore. Tan'ok killed tulkun hunter Mick Scoresby during the battle.

Jake and Quaritch were thrown into the magnetic flux and fought again while Spider followed. When Spider fell from floating terrain, both men worked together to save him. After Neytiri and the children arrived, Quaritch threw himself from the rock and disappeared.

After the battle, Spider connected with the underwater spirit trees alongside the Metkayina. He encountered deceased Na'vi and met Grace Augustine through Kiri. Spider was then formally accepted into Na'vi society.

The Ash People (Mangkwan Clan)

Avatar: Fire And Ash introduced the Mangkwan, a Na'vi clan that lived in volcanic regions of Pandora. Unlike other Na'vi societies, this type of Na'vi rejected Eywa and followed a more aggressive philosophy shaped by their harsh environment. Their territory consisted of ash-covered terrain, lava flows, and scorched ecosystems, which influenced their survival strategies and culture. The Mangkwan relied heavily on fire-based tactics and warfare, setting them apart from the more spiritually guided traditions of clans like the Omaticaya and Metkayina. Under the leadership of their matriarch Varang, the Mangkwan formed an alliance with Colonel Quaritch and the RDA, marking one of the first major cases of a Na'vi clan cooperating directly with humans.

The Wind Traders (Tlalim Clan)

Avatar: Fire And Ash also introduced the Wind Traders, a nomadic Na'vi clan that traveled through Pandora's skies. Also known as the Tlalim clan, they lived aboard large flying creatures that functioned as mobile settlements. Unlike the Mangkwan, the Wind Traders maintained a neutral role and acted as intermediaries between different Na'vi societies. Their lifestyle centered on aerial travel, trade, and communication, allowing them to move between distant regions of Pandora. The clan represented another major cultural variation among the Na'vi and demonstrated that Pandora supported airborne societies in addition to forest, ocean, and volcanic clans.

Avatar Timeline Placement

Avatar: Fire And Ash took place immediately after the events of Avatar: The Way Of Water, which was set around 2168. The story continued directly following the battle at the SeaDragon and the death of Neteyam, with the Sully family remaining among the Metkayina reef clan. With no major time jump between films, Fire And Ash depicted the next phase of the conflict as the RDA expanded its operations across Pandora. The original Avatar (2009) took place in 2154, when Jake Sully first joined the Omaticaya.
