By | Published April 19, 2024

Since the release of the popular sci-fi action movie "Alien vs Predator: Requiem" in 2007, fans of the franchise have been eagerly anticipating a third installment in the series. Over the years, rumors and speculation about a potential "Alien vs Predator 3" have circulated among fans and in the media. While no official confirmation has been given by the filmmakers or production companies, there have been hints and indications that a new movie may be in the works. This article will explore the latest rumors and speculation surrounding Aliens vs Predator 3, including unproduced scripts and ideas used in video games and books, and the status of the franchise under Disney.

A Sequel to Aliens vs Predator: Requiem

Yautja Prime as a possibility in Alien vs Predator 3

The Aliens vs Predator: Requiem movie (also known as Alien vs Predator 2) left the door open for a sequel. In the story, a woman named Yutani was introduced and hinted at a Weyland and Yutani merger process. Also, several main characters were left alive at the end of the movie (although the lead Predator died). One of the best things in the movie was seeing the Predator homeworld which could also be included in the new movie. The directors of the movie - the Strauss brothers have shown interest in making the sequel and making it in the future. Aliens vs Predator: Requiem did not do well critically or financially, so the idea is mostly buried.

We can be sure that Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis would be involved with making the creatures if Alien vs Predator 3 if ever made. Ian White has been involved both with the Prometheus and Predator franchises, so he could possibly return to play another Predator. However, it is unlikely that any of the actors from Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem would return. Actor Johnny Lewis was killed in 2012 in a freak accident. Ridley Scott and James Cameron have expressed their dislike of the AvP series in several interviews. As long as Ridley Scott is still active with the series, it will hinder the possibility of Alien vs Predator 3 happening.

Liam O'Donnell's Unused Alien vs. Predator 3 Concept

Recently, Alien vs. Predator Galaxy released a scoop about the original treatment for Alien vs. Predator 3 by Liam O’Donnell who worked closely together with the Strauss brothers. O'Donnell wrote a treatment in 2007 while working on Alien vs. Predator Requiem, which takes place twenty years in the future in Africa. The movie was set on Earth to keep the budget down. The story focuses on a UN peacekeeper who becomes embroiled in a conflict between a tribal leader and a rebel group who are opposed to Weyland-Yutani Corporation's increasing influence. The treatment also features the return of the Alien Queen from the original film who had survived under the ice due to global warming. From the Yautja side, two feracious Predators (called Twins) would be taking on both Special Ops soldiers and the Alien Queen. Although this film was never made, it offers an interesting glimpse of what could have been.

The Hunt: Alien vs Predator - Peter Bigg's Unproduced Script

Broken Tusk fights Aliens in scene that would be great in Alien vs Predator 3

The Hunt: Alien vs Predator was a 1991 script draft written by Peter Briggs (one of the writers of the first Hellboy movie). Briggs was the first person to undertake the project, although after his script was rejected the development of the film would stall for almost a decade until Paul W. S. Anderson picked it up. His script bears no relation to Alien vs Predator as it was ultimately made, and is instead based more closely on the original Aliens vs Predator comic book by Dark Horse Comics written in 1990. The script is very good and would be a great basis for the possible Alien vs. Predator 3 full movie. It is set in the future and finally includes the Colonial Marines.

Aliens vs Predator 3: The Video Game

Xenomorph Prime Hiveworld as a possibility in Alien vs Predator 3

In 2010, Sega released a sequel to Aliens vs Predator 2, confusingly titled just Aliens vs Predator. Rebellion, the developers of the first game in the series, returned to develop it. The action took place on a jungle planet named BG-386. There was a secret research facility run by Carl Bishop Weyland, who was actually an android based on Peter Weyland, the character from the first AvP movie. Lance Hendriksen also returned to give a voice to him. The ending of the game hinted heavily at the presence of a Xenomorph Hiveworld (origin planet of the Aliens). Of course, the Predators were interested in going hunting on the planet and the humans were interested in the research and bioweapons possibilities. The game was heavily influenced by the 2 AvP movies and can be considered Alien vs Predator 3 in game form.

Alien vs. Predator Under Disney

Aliens vs. Predators: Ultimate Prey by Titan Books, license owned by Disney

When Disney bought 20th Century Fox in 2020, it inherited the rights to the Alien, Predator, and Alien vs. Predator franchises. The directions for the first two were immediately clear, with Alien getting a TV show in 2023 by Noah Hawley and Predator releasing a new movie in the summer of 2022 - Predator: Prey by Dan Trachtenberg. At the start of 2022, Disney solved the legal troubles of the Predator franchise with the series writers John and James Thomas. There has not been much movement in terms of Alien vs. Predator, besides a new book being released in 2022 - Aliens vs. Predators: Ultimate Prey. The book was an anthology of fifteen stories, spanning different time periods and locations, including Earth.

Alien vs. Predator 3 Release Date

Promotion for Alien TV series that is about to be released on Hulu

As Alien vs. Predator 3 has not been announced, the release date of the inevitable movie was only speculated on. The latest Predator movie, Prey, was released in August 2022 on Disney's streaming platforms to great critical success. The next Alien movie, Alien: Romulus, has almost wrapped production and will be released in August 2024. Disney might look at the success of Romulus to decide on the fate of the movie, but if AvP 3 would be announced in 2024, the earliest it would be released is at the end of 2025. As Prey, it might also be released on Hulu or Disney+ streaming platforms.

Fake trailers for "Alien vs. Predator 3" have been a popular subject among fans of the franchise. These trailers often feature convincing footage and exciting action sequences, but are ultimately revealed to be fan-made creations. An example is the trailer created by user Neverending Story titled "Alien Vs. Predator 3 Reboot", which successfully combines footage from most of the Alien and Predator films. Another fan trailer titled Alien vs Predator 3: Retribution was released in early 2024, creating excitement that Will Smith would be part of the franchise. Despite not being officially endorsed by the film studios, these fake trailers serve as a testament to the enduring popularity of the "Alien" and "Predator" series, and the excitement that fans feel for the possibility of a third installment.

Alien vs. Predator Anime

A concept for an Anime Alien vs. Predator series

Alien vs. Predator 3 almost became an anime series instead. "Alien vs. Predator: Annihilation," an unreleased CG anime series, was the brainchild of Shinji Aramaki and produced by Josh Izzo, Eric Calderon, and Dave Baker. Commissioned by 20th Century Fox in 2015/2016, this 10-episode project was influenced by the original AvP comic books, featuring a future-set narrative with characters such as a cyborg Predator and a human-alien hybrid. Despite full completion, the series remained shelved, with only snippets of its existence emerging through interviews and podcasts in 2023. Insights from Calderon and Baker, revealed in "The Best TV Never Made Podcast," hint at the series' complex development, diverging creative visions, and eventual demise within Fox's evolving priorities and the broader Alien and Predator franchise strategies.

Conclusion

While the anticipation for Alien vs. Predator 3 continues to grow, it's important to remember that no official announcement has been made about the production of this movie. However, with the franchise's history of success and the undeniable enthusiasm of its fans, it's certainly possible that a third installment is in the works. As rumors and speculation continue to circulate, fans can only hope that their dreams will be realized with a new chapter in this iconic franchise. Until then, we'll have to keep our eyes peeled for any official news about AvP 3 and keep our fingers crossed that the movie will eventually make its way to the big screen under Disney.
