Alien: Descendant (2024): Plot, Characters & Lore
Alien: Descendant is a Marvel Comics storyline written by Declan Shalvey, collecting Alien Annual (2023) #1, titled Regicide, and Alien (2023B) #1 to #4. Danny Earls drew the Annual, while Andrea Broccardo and Shalvey drew the four Descendant issues. The arc followed Alien: Thaw and was collected as Alien by Shalvey & Broccardo Vol. 2: Descendant. It returns to the ice moon LV-695, later called Cocito, where white Xenomorph hybrids first rose and where Zasha Zahn came back years later under the name Cole.
Plot Summary
Infested Ship Crashes On LV-695
Around 2156, long before Talbot Engineering built an outpost on the ice, a derelict starship crowded with Xenomorphs drifted into the gravity of LV-695. A Queen and her hive rode inside the dark hull as the vessel fell toward the frozen surface. The crash lit the night, tore open the ice and scattered eggs across the wreck field with no human colony yet standing on the moon to see it.
Local fauna felt the shock through the snow and came to the burning metal. Ovomorphs lay open on the ice while survivors of the hive crawled out into a world that had never met their kind. Regicide opens on that empty moon with no human witnesses at all, only the Queen, her drones and the cold around the wreck field of LV-695. The crash left eggs and broken hull plates scattered across a glacier that would stay quiet for decades.
Native Creatures At The Wreck
Huge multi-legged natives of LV-695 climbed over the broken hull and sniffed among the eggs after the crash. They were the dominant animals of the ice, armored and curious, and they treated the wreck as a new feeding ground. Facehuggers waited in the pods as the beasts pushed closer to the opened shells. The Queen's drones still held parts of the dark hull while the moon's own life pressed in from every side of the wreck field.
The first contacts were clumsy on both sides of the ice. Native faces did not fit a Facehugger easily, and several attacks failed before the parasites forced genetic material into the hosts by other means shown in Regicide. The hive from the ship began to feed on the moon's own life and to take on traits from those animals, turning a simple crash into the start of a new strain.
Facehuggers Attack The Fauna
Facehuggers poured from the eggs and leapt onto the native beasts around the crash site on LV-695. Some hosts shook them off, but others stayed down long enough for implantation while the Queen's brood hunted through the snow. Black Xenomorphs tore into the fauna and the fauna crushed drones in turn, with acid blood steaming on the ice. Regicide keeps humans out of the frame and shows only that war until the implanted hosts began to die.
Birth Of The White Hybrids
When the implanted natives died they did not birth ordinary drones. Pale white Xenomorphs tore free, shaped by the genetics of LV-695's fauna, colder and stranger than the black hive from the crashed ship. Regicide uses that birth to explain the white strain later seen during Alien: Thaw on the same moon. The hybrids turned on both remaining natives and classic Xenomorphs, giving LV-695 a second hive under the glacier.
White Xenomorphs Challenge The Queen
The white brood closed on the Queen that had ruled the crashed ship since the fall. They fought her drones in the ice tunnels and dragged the conflict into her nest beneath the wreck until one pale hybrid overpowered her and took the egg-laying place. New ovomorphs then produced white Facehuggers instead of the old black strain. That victory set the buried ecology that Batya Zahn and her family would later dig into on LV-695 during Thaw.
Avalanche Buries The Hive War
The last clash between the black hive and the white hybrids shook the glacier around the wreck. An avalanche roared down the slopes and buried Queen, hybrids and remaining drones under meters of ice and rock on LV-695. The freeze locked both strains until 2195, when the Zahn outpost and the Boreas crews broke into that same buried battlefield during Thaw. Regicide ends on the silent ice with both hives sealed under snow.
Egg At Cloughleigh Colony
Years after the crash on LV-695, miners at the Cloughleigh colony on another world found a Xenomorph egg near their dig around 2168. A Facehugger took one worker, and a Chestburster soon followed inside the colony halls while the company tried and failed to hold the creature for study. Two company androids, 122-M and 227-N, argued over containment as young commander Jun Yutani watched. The Cloughleigh flashbacks in Descendant tie that outbreak to the synthetic later known as Dayton Zahn.
Android 227-N At Cloughleigh
When the Xenomorph broke free it destroyed 122-M and tore an arm from 227-N in the Cloughleigh corridors. Against the colony commander's orders, 227-N incinerated the creature rather than let the company keep it alive for study, and young Jun Yutani ordered the damaged synthetic disposed of after that fight. Descendant reveals that 227-N survived disposal and later took work with the Zahn family under a new face as Dayton on LV-695, which is why Jun later recognized him on Cocito.
Cole Aboard The Descendant
Thirteen years after Thaw, in 2208, Zasha Zahn served Weyland-Yutani under the name Cole. She led salvage inspectors on the company ship Descendant, commanded by the teenage heir Jun Yutani III. The crew believed they were only recovering a lost Conestoga-class wreck from the ice moon. Cole kept her real reasons quiet: she had returned for the synthetic who once protected her family, not for company salvage bonuses on the Boreas.
Landing On Cocito
LV-695 had been renamed Cocito on company charts after the Thaw disaster. The Descendant teams landed on the ice near the shifted wreck of the USCSS Boreas, which had drifted under the ice since it sank in 2195, and marked the old Keg ground as a secondary site. Jun Yutani arrived to supervise in person from a private craft alongside the Descendant teams. Cole used the official salvage plan as cover for her own search for Dayton after thirteen years of silence on the moon.
Salvage Dive On The Boreas
Salvage divers in heavy suits dropped through holes cut in the ice toward the drowned USCSS Boreas. The ship rested deep under cold water, its hull marked with company paint and torn plating from the 2195 sinking, while surface crews watched from heated shelters. The dive woke things that had slept against the metal for thirteen years, stirring dormant Xenomorphs in the wreck and the water of Cocito. Cole stayed focused on reaching the old Keg while the official teams pressed the salvage schedule Jun had set.
Xenomorph In The Sunken Wreck
Inside the flooded decks a black Xenomorph moved through silt and hanging cables of the Boreas. Divers who went too far into the dark did not return to the ice hole, and panic radios called for abort as the first bodies floated up toward the surface teams on Cocito. The company still ordered the work to continue. Jun Yutani wanted the wreck and whatever biological data it held from the 2195 outbreak, while Cole used the chaos to slip away toward the ruined outpost.
Outbreak On The Ice
Surface teams met the same outbreak when Xenomorphs climbed from the water and from cracks in the glacier around the salvage camp. Flares and rifles lit the snow as black drones and pale hybrids both entered the fight on Cocito, and the Descendant camp collapsed within hours of the first breach. Cole fought through the storm toward the Keg while Jun's people tried to hold a perimeter. Both Xenomorph strains from Regicide's buried war were hunting living prey again across the same ice that had buried them.
Zasha Searches The Keg
Zasha reached the broken shell of the Keg alone after leaving the salvage camp. Snow filled the corridors where her mother had once worked, and green company crates still lay where the explosions of 2195 had left them. She called for Dayton through empty labs and flooded lower levels while white and black Xenomorphs stalked the same ruins. The search was the true reason she had joined the Descendant crew under a false name as Cole.
Dayton Found At The Keg
She found Dayton torn nearly in half yet still conscious, wired into a makeshift power supply in the wreckage of the Keg. He recognized her at once after thirteen years alone on the ice since Thaw. Damage left him weak and bound to the cables that kept him alive in the dark. Zasha tried to free him before Jun's party arrived, knowing the company would want the secrets in his memory banks about Cloughleigh and LV-695.
Jun Yutani Confronts Dayton
Jun Yutani walked into the lab with armed support and a bat over her shoulder. She looked at Dayton and called him by the old designation 227-N, proving she remembered Cloughleigh from about forty years earlier. Dayton answered by calling her Junior and saying she had no real claim to the Weyland-Yutani throne. The salvage of the Boreas had always been a cover for seizing the synthetic's knowledge from that earlier colony.
Zasha learned that Jun was not only a company heir but a hunter of the android who had once burned a specimen against orders at Cloughleigh. Dayton warned her as the confrontation turned violent in the Keg lab, mocking Jun as holding only leftovers from the real Yutanis. The personal history of that mining colony crashed into the present on Cocito in that recognition, with the crew's Mister Yutani title giving way to Dayton's Junior taunt.
Hybrids Battle Black Xenomorphs
Outside the Keg the white hybrids and black drones tore into each other again as they had in Regicide under the ice. Salvage crews caught between them died in minutes on the open snow of Cocito, and a larger native beast later called a Winterbeast moved with the hybrids, carrying a Queen embryo of its own. The civil war of strains gave Zasha and Dayton brief openings to move while company teams still tried to lift the Boreas. Descendant keeps both hives active on Cocito until Dayton's later strike from orbit ends the salvage.
Raising The Boreas
Jun's crews finally hauled the USCSS Boreas up through the ice even as the outbreak raged around the winches. The raised hull crawled with both Xenomorph strains from the old war under Cocito, and boarding parties sent to clear cargo were overrun before they could hold any section. Zasha still refused to leave Dayton behind while Jun pushed for biological samples from every strain and every secret in the synthetic's memory. The salvage that had begun as a company recovery job had become a running battle across ice and ship.
Nuclear Strike Ordered
While Jun tried to bargain with him, Dayton armed a nuke from the orbiting Descendant and launched it at the Cocito site. He chose erasure over capture once Jun's true goal for his memory was clear, and he said as much on panel as the weapon left the company ship. Zasha chose to stay with him as the countdown ran and she fought the bodyguard Alice. The blast hit the salvage site; the comic does not inventory every hive, wreck deck, or body left on Cocito afterward.
Operation Descendant Erased
After the missile strike, the story cuts to Earth one month later. Jun Yutani is there with Dayton, still pressing to open his mind for whatever he saw of the creatures years earlier, and she speaks of the salvage crew and of the daughter who lied her way onto that ship. A Weyland-Yutani terminal under a Dayton login shows Operation Descendant deleting files while he looks out over the city and thinks about family. Zasha's fate on Cocito is not shown as a recovered body; Descendant ends on that erasure with Jun's contested claim left unresolved.
Key Characters
- Zasha Zahn / Cole was the survivor of Alien: Thaw. She returned to Cocito under a false name to find Dayton and stayed with him when he launched the nuke; her body is not recovered on panel.
- Dayton / 227-N was the synthetic who had lived as Dayton Zahn. He survived torn apart at the Keg, armed a nuke from the Descendant, and appears again on Earth in the coda.
- Jun Yutani III commanded the Descendant salvage, confronted Dayton as 227-N on Cocito, and appears again on Earth in the coda as Operation Descendant files are deleted.
- The white Xenomorph hybrids were born from LV-695 fauna in Regicide, later fought the black hive again during the Descendant salvage.
Collected Editions
Marvel Comics released Alien Annual (2023) #1 Regicide on October 4, 2023, written by Declan Shalvey with art by Danny Earls and colors by Ruth Redmond. Alien (2023B) #1 to #4 followed from November 2023 into early 2024, drawn by Andrea Broccardo with Shalvey contributing flashback art and colors. VC's Clayton Cowles lettered the run and Sarah Brunstad edited it with Daniel Kirchhoffer and Lindsey Cohick. The Annual went on sale October 4, 2023, ahead of Alien (2023B) #1 that November.
The trade paperback Alien by Shalvey & Broccardo Vol. 2: Descendant collected the Annual and all four issues on April 3, 2024. Main covers included Declan Shalvey's Annual art and Javi Fernandez covers for the Descendant issues. The book followed Vol. 1: Thaw in the same creative line at Marvel and remains the standard collected edition for the arc. Comic book databases list the TPB at 136 pages including Regicide and Descendant #1 to #4.
Behind The Scenes
Marvel billed the Annual as connective tissue between Thaw and the new Alien #1, and Shalvey drew parts of Descendant himself so the Cloughleigh flashbacks could share pages with Broccardo's present-day Cocito art. The white strain's origin in Regicide answers a question left open at the end of Alien: Thaw, while the Descendant issues make Operation Descendant the company frame for the Cocito salvage and its later file wipe on Earth. Shalvey and Earls's Annual has no human POV characters, only the hive war on the ice.
Conclusion
Alien: Descendant closes Declan Shalvey and Andrea Broccardo's LV-695 saga by joining Regicide's hive war to Cole's return and Jun Yutani's hunt for Dayton. The story ends with Dayton's nuke strike on the Cocito salvage, Zasha's fate unconfirmed on panel, and Operation Descendant files deleting on Earth while Jun and Dayton share that coda. It remains the direct sequel to Thaw in Marvel's Shalvey and Broccardo Alien line. The TPB is sold as the direct follow-up volume to Alien by Shalvey and Broccardo Vol. 1: Thaw.
